A few weeks ago in our Time Based Media class we did a Foley Exercise.
Foley is the reproduction of everyday sounds that are added to video, after they the video has been shot, to enhance audio quality. These sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. Some ways Foley artists recreate sounds in their studio are for example punching raw meat or a head of lettuce to recreate the sound of a punch. Foley artists recreate the sounds that the video should have. There will be a link at the bottom to watch a video of Foley artists at work.
For our assignment we all paired up with someone. We were allowed to use major movies since this was only a school exercise. With a 10 second clip we took from YouTube, we had to recreate all the noises and voices in the clip. The video clip we chose is from the fantastic movie Inception. The first video is the real clip, and the Second video is our interpretation. We had a lot of laughs making this, and it was a fun exercise to think about other things that could make similar sounds. I hope you enjoy out first attempt at Foley. At the Bottom there will also be a link to my partner and dear friends website, as well as a link to learn more about Foley artists.
Here is our original clip from Inception.
